Valarie and I had a blast Monday night seeing Monty Python's Eric Idle in "The Greedy Bastard Tour", in which he does various Python skits along with some new and pre-Python material with the help of three other players. In his online tour diary afterward, Idle said, "Last night was one of our finest shows, in the most improbable place: an old Porno cinema in Portland." Apparently The Aladdin Theater showed Deep Throat in the 1970s for a very long time. Going into the show, I felt a little conflicted about the idea of Idle just sort of serving up warmed-over Python skits, but once it started the show was so much fun I didn't care. I especially enjoyed the classic "No what I mean, nudge nudge" skit and an audience sing along of "Sit On My Face And Tell Me That You Love Me". For his encore, Idle sang a new song called "Fuck Christmas" that was absolutely brilliant in skewering pre-12/25 commercialism.
What I really liked is that he gave you what you wanted (the lumberjack song! always look on the bright side of life!), but he also had some interesting surprises, such as a piece he was performing at Cambridge the night he met John Cleese or a skit from Beyond the Fringe.
Actually, what I really, really liked were lines like "You can tell the elves to go fuck themselves!" in "Fuck Christmas".
