The Pearl District – Then and Now
The Pearl District was practically deserted 25 years ago. Old Town Historic District walking tour
The commercial district near the historic Skidmore Fountain and the oldest standing buildings in downtown comprise this tour of Portland’s only National Historic District. Attendees on this Architectural Heritage Center tour will see the work of Portland’s earliest architects, learning how cast iron played a central role in their designs and how the city developed so close to the river, and along the way learning about some beautiful but long-lost buildings while also seeing great examples of historic preservation. Historic Peninsula Park tour
Peninsula Park was Portland's first public Rose Garden upon its 1909 completion, and it remains the crown jewel of the city's park system with gardens and pavilions designed in the City Beautiful tradition of landscape architecture. As this Positively Portland walking tour will demonstrate, the neighborhood is also the site of Jefferson High School (1908), North Portland Public Library (1913), and the now vacant Mt Hood Masonic Temple (1923). East Portland/Grand Avenue Historic District tour
Along Grand Avenue, once the main commercial spine in the original and separate city of East Portland, lies an amazing mix of architecture from Italianate to Art Deco. Among the many buildings, including a few hidden gems, this Architectural Heritage Center walking tour will revealthe well-known Barber Block, a one-time mortuary, and West’s Block, the oldest building on Grand Avenue and home of the AHC itself. Surface Into Form workshop
How much visual expression can come from a single sheet of material? Exhibit pieces explore how surfaces can be manipulated to bounce light in interesting ways. They show how simple cuts and folds can create complex patterns of flaps or pockets to catch light. As part of an exhibit running from June 21 through July 28, Nancy Cheng will demonstrate in this workshop how to experiment with light and shadow effects by manipulating surfaces and material properties. Learn how curved cuts, folds and clasps can sculpt sheet materials to produce aesthetic forms. Examine how lighting can transform appearances when capturing photos of work in progress. Midtown and West End walking tour
Explore downtown between the South Park Blocks and I-405, an area filled with iconic buildings as well as numerous lesser-known architectural gems. Attendees on this Architectural Heritage Center tour will see historic apartment houses, storefronts, cultural and religious buildings, and the remnants of what was once a thriving residential area, while also gaining an understanding of the impacts of development on historic preservation efforts. The West End has also become one of Portland's hottest shopping and restaurant destinations, as evidenced by a New York Times travel article last year, and includes noteworthy recent projects like Lever Architecture's Union Way, Skylab Architecture's Blackbox building, and ZFG's 12 West tower, not to mention historic gems like A.E. Doyle's Central Library. Tour meets on the north side of Central Library, on SW Yamhill Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. 10AM Tuesday, July 11. $20 ($12 for AHC members).
Downtown Oregon City walking tour: the first capital Of Oregon
Come and explore the downtown of Oregon's first incorporated city. On this Architectural Heritage Center walking tour you attendees will see buildings and landmarks along Main Street, including the historic Arch Bridge connecting Oregon City to West Linn, while also learning about the history of the city that was platted by Dr. John McLoughlin and was once the capital of the Oregon Territory and the end of the Oregon Trail. Tour begins outside the McLoughlin House, 713 Center Street. 6PM Wednesday, July 12. $20 ($12 for AHC members).
IIDA Oregon — Picnic Classic
Join the Oregon chapter of IIDA (the International Interior Designers Association) in celebrating summer in the city with this annual fundraiser. The evening will begin with a State of the Chapter Address, followed by a laid back summer bash in the eclectic Central Eastside. Enjoy lawn games on the outdoor patio or soak up the sunset on the rooftop deck. Photo booths will be on hand, while DJ Century providing the soundtrack. Picnic style fare, fruity cocktails and slushies will be served with raffle tickets available for purchase for our a series of prizes. Classical downtown Portland tour
Downtown Portland contains an extensive collection of classically influenced buildings, many of which are clad with glazed terra cotta, a building material that was at its height of popularity in the early 20th century. Visitors on this Architectural Heritage Center tour will see the city’s first “skyscraper,” a bank that could have been a Greek temple and learn about several architects from this period who left an indelible impression on Portland including A.E. Doyle, the firm of Whidden and Lewis, and the Reid Brothers from San Francisco. Tour begins on SW Broadway at Pioneer Courthouse Square, above the fountain. 6PM Thursday, July 13. $20 ($12 for AHC members).
Historic Sellwood walking tour
Before it was brought within Portland city limits in 1893, Sellwood was an independent, incorporated town. This Architectural Heritage Center tour takes you through a section of the original Sellwood tract where you’ll see a variety of houses and commercial buildings, some dating back to the town’s earliest days. Tour meets at Oaks Pioneer Church, 455 SE Spokane Street. 6PM Thursday, July 9. $209 ($12 for AHC members).
