Integrating Performance Based Analysis Into the Design Process: A Conversation with Energy Analysts
This continuing-education seminar, offered by the AIA/Portland Committee on the Environment, will cover the rich topic of performance based modeling and analysis, and how it enhances design decision making. Eric McDaniel and a panel of experts will cover the various aspects of design performance modeling and present case studies on how it has been successfully implemented to elevate building performance. The panel will discuss how the process of modeling provides additional value to the project and supports commitments to energy conservation, resiliency and AIA 2030. A demonstration of simple energy modeling will be also covered to illustrate the level of information that can be obtained in early design. Panelists will include Eric McDaniel of Sora Design Group, Amy Jarvis of ZGF Architects, Mitch Dec from Glumac Engineers, and Thornton Energy's Brian Thornton. AIA/Portland Center For Architecture, 403 NW 11th Avenue. 12PM Wednesday, December 2. $70 (50 for AIA members).
AIA Historic Resources Committee
The recently approved-plan to remodel and restore the Michael Graves-designed Portland Building will be discussed, with a presentation from the City of Portland's Office of Management and Finance. A redesign of this National Register-listed landmark may seek to change the exterior facade, making shaded glass transparent in order to bring more light into the building. But it will need the approval of the Design Commission as well as the Historic Landmarks Commission. City Hall, 1221 SW Fourth Avenue, Rose Room. 12PM Wednesday, December 2. Free.
Duniway Holiday Home Tour
This self-paced tour supports funding for art and technology programs, classroom grants, library books, cultural arts and other academic enrichments for Duniway Elementary students (in other words, lots of stuff that schools themselves should provide but sadly often don't). Included are a 1912 Craftsman bungalow, a 1923 Colonial Revival home, 1924 and 1926 Arts & Crafts style houses, and a 1938 Tudor, among others. Tour begins at Duniway Elementary School, 7700 SE Reed College Place. 10AM-3PM and 6-9PM Friday, December 4. $25.
PSU Master of Architecture Open House
Interested in studying architecture at the graduate or undergraduate level? At the Portland State University School of Architecture Open House on Friday, December 4, visitors can learn more about available two and three-year Master of Architecture degree tracks, as well as the graduate certificate in public interest design. Portland State University, Shattuck Hall, SW Broadway and Hall Street. 1PM Friday, December 4. Free.
Vaughn Street Park To The Delta Dome: Portland’s (Real And Imagined) Sports Venues
Many cities build sports stadiums only to replace them a generation later with bigger and better versions. Yet Portland has a tradition of decades-long use and reuse, from Vaughn Street Park and Memorial Coliseum reaching past 50 years to Multnomah Stadium now nearing 90. Other ideas have streaked across the imagination of Portlanders over the years, with some, like the Delta Dome in the 1960s, reaching the ballot and Paul Allen's Rose Garden coming to fruition in the 1990s. So why were some stadiums built while others failed to materialize? Why were stadiums built where they were and not in other parts of town? Local writer Michael Orr, author of The 1975 Portland Timbers: the Birth of Soccer City, presents an overview of the history of these structures in Portland, including some never constructed. Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Avenue. 10AM Saturday, December 5. $20 ($12 for AHC members).
Drawing at the Aubrey Watzek House
Bring a notepad or easel and enjoy the changing light of the varied rooms of the Watzek House. Designed by John Yeon and completed in 1937, the home's bold yet timeless synthesis of many traditions of residential architecture into a refined new language became an important inspiration for the Northwest Style of Modernism. Published widely and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art next to such icons as Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, the house has influenced generations of architects. The drawing session is limited to 12 people. Watzek House, 1061 SW Skyline Boulevard. 1PM Saturday, December 5. $30 (free to Watzek House members).
AWB-Oregon Holiday Open House
The Oregon chapter of Architects Without Borders will celebrate the year's accomplishments while screening a short video featuring award-winning German architect, Anna Heringer called "Handmade Architecture as a Catalyst for Development." AIA Center For Architecture, 403 NW 11th Avenue. 6PM Wednesday, December 9. Free.
Architect William Knighton & The Mysterious “Sentinel”
For more than 30 years, William Christmas Knighton designed numerous acclaimed buildings in Portland and the Willamette Valley. His work includes landmarks like the Deepwood Estate in Salem and the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, but he is perhaps most notable for his unique design motif for the Seward Hotel (known for many years as the Governor Hotel, and now known as the Sentinel) in downtown Portland. Lecturer Bob Clay explores the career of William Knighton. Bob will discuss many of Knighton’s most significant works. Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Avenue. 10AM Saturday, December 12. $20 ($12 for AHC members).

I lived in East Moreland as a child and attended Duniway Grade School from 1947 to 1956. I attended the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. I have a deep appreciation for residential style architecture expressed in East Moreland and the classic architecture of Duniway Elementary School and Reed College.
