As a fundraiser for the nonprofit Center For Architecture, artists and architects have donated a series of illustrations and images on 12-inch square surfaces. Works will sell for $12 each. AIA Center for Architecture, 403 NW 11th Avenue. 5:30pm Thursday, December 5. Free.
Canstruction Kickoff
In this annual charity fundraiser and competition, teams of Portland metro area architects, engineers, contractors, designers and students compete to design and build structures made entirely from canned foods as a creative fundraising and teambuilding opportunity for the A/E/C community. The competition is $250 to enter, and proceeds benefit the Oregon Food Bank.

Portland’s Slabtown – An Historic Look at Inner Northwest Portland
North of Lovejoy Street and stretching from the Willamette River west to the hills of Forest Park when it was first named in the 1870s, Portland’s “Slabtown” was an isolated community filled with lakes, streams, sawmills, and working class houses. This lecture explores the rich history of Slabtown through a wonderful collection of historic images. Architects Without Borders Holiday Party
The Oregon chapter of Architects Without Borders, which helps build humanitarian projects around the world, will gather for food and drinks to tell the stories of the past year’s projects, including a community garden in Northeast Portland, a school in Tanzania, and a solar energy system in the Democratic Republic of Congo. CFA Film Night
A quartet films will offer a variety of perspectives on our built and natural environments. It’s A Ring Thing takes a playful look at Portland’s historic sidewalk horse rings. Ascending The Giants chronicles efforts to measure Oregon’s tallest and oldest spruce trees. I Am An Artist is a stop-motion animated comedy using vintage Star Wars figures. Tema Hema: The Art of Living in Tohoku profiles an area of Japan hit hard by a March 2011 earthquake. AIA Center for Architecture, 403 NW 11th Avenue. 7:45pm Thursday, December 12. Free.

It'd be nice to see some commentary on the planned tear down of the old Gas & Coke building off the 30 just S of the St Johns Bridge. It's one of the nicest buildings in Portland.
