Thank you so much for this post. There were some powerful statements made last night, It continues to be abundantly clear that this process should not move forward.

D

Did this post really require a gratuitous shot at "Republicans?" Pitiful.

Brian Libby

I'm sorry, "D", if my joke about Republicans offended your earnest sensibilities enough to be distracted from the rest of the post. I made the joke because Republicans are generally thought to be the party favoring business, economics, trade and commerce interests. I also would like to emphasize it was a joke.

You mentioned my acting "pitiful," and I'm not going to participate in any reciprocal name-calling. For all I know, you're a brilliant, friendly person. But if so, why not identify yourself instead of writing your comment anonymously? Is there something you don't want us to know about you, or about your motivations in making these accusations? Feel free to come out of hiding - we'll promise to play nice, even though we're only pitiful Democrats.

Randy Rapaport

Brian,

At least with Republicans you know what you are getting.

The few, super wealthy families in Portland that have owned our waterfront industrial properties for decades or who have been acquiring more real estate in these areas tend to be democratic. And "god forbid" even bringing up the cost of cleaning up these industrial messes which they largely are responsible.

Yes they are Democrats, along with union leadership, PERS officials, School board leaders, PDC execs, Oregon Supreme Court, and most of our leadership.

A trend that we will be discussing, but not from the Oregonian, is more people are going to be unable to afford to pay their property tax bills. I'm talking about the lower 50% of the population regarding median family income, or the bottom 50%. It's a rapid downward spiral once a homeowner stops paying these prop taxes because of interest and fees.

Housing rents are going up at about twice the rate of inflation and triple the family income growth rate. This is not a sustainable trend.

We need 1000's of affordable and workforce housing units developed in Portland over the next decade to increase the supply of housing which is our only chance of keeping rents from continuing to rise much faster than the rate of inflation.

The only real solution is a radical change of leadership at all levels of government, both local and state to new leaders with integrity whose decisions are not compromised by a the wealthiest families and corportations in Oregon.

you had me on your side fully - until the ridiculous Salem Witch Hunt comment. what's being done is unfair, but to compare it to execution is hyperbolic & unhelpful. you don't win support around here this way: you do it with a combination of facts & solid calls for social justice. just look at the anti-coal train efforts. it's fact-based & it waves the flag of justice high. it plays on emotions, yes (oh, the children!) but it doesn't go off the deep end.

Brian Libby

T.A., honestly you probably have a good point. I'm sorry if my going rhetorically overboard has pushed you away from the side of preserving West Hayden. I'd urge you to consider the issue and the side you come down on in a way that ultimately is not influenced by my hot-headedness.

Thank you for posting this. I love Portland, but we have to make a move to Vancouver soon and we are looking for a company that offer services in industrial moving Vancouver

This wildlife area is the largest and most pristine natural environment available to the residents of Hayden Island. What if the city wanted to develop “just part” of Macleay Park in the name of jobs? You know it would never even be suggested partly due to the affluent surrounding neighborhoods. There are many locations in Oregon and Washington that could support this facility with much less impact to the natural environment and those areas also need jobs. The resulting patchwork of habitat on Hayden Island would be a death sentence for many of the native inhabitance of the island. A change of this magnitude should not be passed by a lame duck mayor.

This is about the rich and powerful at the Port feathering their nest at the expense of the politically weak and environmentally defenseless. When are we getting Ross Island back again?

Here is a blog with an image of the project and other good information:

Thank you for the post.

When I say "native inhabitance" I meant to say inhabitants, and I don't mean humans.
