As previously reported on Shelby Wood's PDX Green blog, Ryan Walsh of DRW Design Build in Portland was the grand prize winner in the "How green are you?" contest from Dwell magazine and the American Institute of Architects.
Walsh's circa-1925 bungalow was created over the course of eight years due to financial constraints. Instead of the more traditional process of first defining the aesthetic, then purchasing material to construct it, the house became a collection of various green projects, each utilizing recycled materials in uncommon ways.
The two other finalists also came from the Pacific Northwest: the Gulf Island House by Matthew Woodruff and Clinton Cuddington of Measured Architecture in Vancouver, British Columbia; and the Salvaged Cedar house by Ryan Mankoski, Ninebark Studio & Chad Schneider of ArchiLab Design in Seattle.
"We were especially intrigued with projects that executed beautiful design ideas and were inherently green by concept,” said juror Robert M. Rogers, FAIA, Roger Marvel Architects. “From small ideas for the kitchen, to a way of life, the winners embodied these principles."
