For me, it is walking that sets us apart. I so far have only chosen neighborhoods (Moreland and Sellwood) to live in where I can walk to most of the amenities and services that I require. Likewise, my work neighborhood (downtown). Bus or automobile get me between them, but once there I walk. I have even walked between home and work a few times. This is the identity that Portland inhabits, more so than streetcars and bicycles. There are some walking shoes that cost more than a bicycle, but mostly the money is in the hardware of streetcars and bicycles. Walking is the quieter mode.
