John

Unfortunately, Portland's authentic Italian district was bulldozed so we could have a couple dozen blocks of Corbu-esque nightmare. PDC's FAQ has this gem of a comment on that subject:

"The agency’s main goal is to use public funds to stimulate private sector investment, job creation and expansion of the tax base. PDC’s first major urban renewal project, the South Auditorium Project, is an excellent example. The project replaced 110 acres of blighted downtown property with a spectacular development of new, high-quality offices, housing, and beautiful fountains and plazas."

Someone needs to tell the thousands of Portlanders and visitors who avoid that district like the plague how "spectacular" and "beautiful" it is.

As for this proposed new project, I don't have a problem with it, but maybe it shouldn't be called "Little Italy", unless we're trying to have both the smallest Little Italy and the smallest Chinatown in the country (neither of which would be in the historically accurate location).
